Dr Niero completed his internship and residency at Austin Health before going onto complete his Basic Surgical Training (BST). During his surgical rotations he enjoyed the the case mix and innovation in Urology which cultivated his interest in becoming a Urologist as a vocation.

He also used the opportunity at this time in his career, to pursue and complete a Doctorate of Medicine in Immunology of Prostate Cancer through the University of Melbourne, Austin Health and Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research.

In 2010, he undertook the advanced surgical training program in Urology within the Victorian section. He completed the six year program in both metropolitan and regional centres and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2015.

In order to provide a world class service to his patients, Dr Niero accepted a prestigious two year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery at one of the leading institutes in the world in minimally invasive surgery - University of Southern California (USC) - Keck School of Medicine.

Fellowship

Two year internationally acclaimed fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC), with the first year dedicated to clinical and basic sciences research in the translational genomics lab, working with Prof. John Carpten on the genetic profile of metastatic prostate cancer. This multi year, global research continues with input from research facilities internationally.

The second year of the fellowship, was a dedicated clinical year where Dr Niero was appointed as junior faculty member (Clinical Instructor in Urology) at the Keck School of Medicine. Working with world leaders in robotic and laparoscopic urology, he was part of an innovative team, led by Prof Inderbir Gill. During his time at USC, Dr Niero helped pioneer and develop robotic techniques including robotic IVC thrombectomy, robotic retroperineal lymph node dissection and robotic radical cystectomy and intercorporeal neobladder formation.
